What is a Prom Dress?

What is a Prom Dress?
What is a Prom Dress? The simple answer is that it is the dress which you wear to your Prom. However this does now really answer the question, which should be what style should my Prom Dress be. The answer to this question is much more complicated.
Not so many years ago there were a number of unwritten (and some written) rules about what was appropriate – and inappropriate apparel. Now, however, almost anything goes – almost anything! The first and main rule is that it should make you feel good about yourself and your body. It should give you confidence and make you sparkle. It should make you feel like a fairytale princess. A big order, you may think, but when broken down it is not so very difficult.
There are as many different styles and colours for Prom Dresses as there are people to wear them. This night marks a big event in your life and you want to remember it with pleasure and pride, so the next rule is wear something that suits your personality and that you are comfortable with.
If you like to be the life and soul of the party, then you will want a Prom Dress which is flamboyant and in your face to reflect that. Bright colours and bold styles are for you and there are still loads of choices to be made.If you are, however, quieter, more shy and reflective, the chose something more elegant and classic.
A Prom dress can be a long ball dress or a short flirty dress above the knees; or anything in between. It may be a strapless, off the shoulder dress or cover up to your chin. The choice is yours. Take time and consider it. Try on as many dresses as you can and look at yourself. Don’t stick to the style or colour of dress you always wear, be adventurous when trying on Prom Dresses – you never know you might find something totally different from your norm which suits you perfectly. Remember the first rule though. You have to wear the dress and feel confident and comfortable in it. Don’t be persuaded by somebody else to wear a dress which made you feel uncomfortable and self conscious. You want to feel on top of the world.
When choosing your prom dresses bear in mind what accessories you will want to wear with it. This become even more important if you are on a limited budget, or if you want to wear a special piece of jewelry. Remember you are going to be wearing this dress for the whole evening and hopefully you will be dancing in it all night. It should make movement easy. Don’t select a dress which fits like a glove and is narrow in the leg, so that you can only walk with tiny steps – this would be great for a formal supper or a theatre date but not for your Prom. Your Prom Dress should fit beautifully, another reason to start looking early. If you find the right Prom Dress and it doesn’t fit quite right (and how many of us are a perfect dress size), then have a altered so that it does fir. This may mean having the hem shortened/lengthened. The bust/hips/waist taken in/let out. All are doable but take time. However, if the dress does need comprehensive restructuring, you might want to look for another Prom Dress as all alterations subtly alter the look of the gown.
