Prom is an important, exciting rite-of-passage for teenage girls, and because this night is so important, many girls spend hours and hours searching for that perfect dress. They want one that accents their features, highlights their coloring, and overall makes them look beautiful. This can be achieved if they make sure to buy a dress that is flattering to their body type.
For the girl with a well-proportioned body and a shape known as the hourglass shape, choosing a dress should be easy. Basically anything will work for this body type. Make sure you don't buy wedding dress that is too tight, however, because that will ruin the look. This rule applies to all body shapes.
Some girls are exactly opposite the hourglass shape. They have small curves, but are overall straight up and down. Finding a dress that draws the eye to the waist either with a strap or a bow will create the illusion of a curvy figure. The waist should be the focal point of the dress.
The other most common body shapes are the triangular and the inverted triangular shapes. The triangular shaped woman has a larger hip area than bust area. Form-fitting dresses will look great on this body, but if the dress is too tight it will emphasize the hip area which will make the body look out of proportion. Make sure the dress fits properly. The inverted triangular shape is the exact opposite. This woman has a larger bust and smaller hips. To accent this body shape and bring about the illusion of proportion you will want to avoid spaghetti straps and instead focus on a dress with a flattering neckline and bust support. The idea is to minimize the appearance of the bust while accenting the rest of the body.
Of course, prom dresses come in all shapes, styles, and colors and a woman truly can spend hours and hours trying on dress after dress after dress. If you remember these basic rules for you body shape, however, you can cut out some of this time by focusing only on the dress that will work for you.
